I have the Sony reader and it is imo far better than the kindle it reads epub format as well as many others the construction ( metal body) is much better than the kindles plastic and the sony cases are superb as well. If you are not sure how much you will use one consider a secondhand Sony prs505 as that has a fantastic lighted case available for reading in the dark. ( Just google it. Doubles as a great hard screen protector during transport but put the thin screen protector you can buy online on both the e-reader and on the inside of the plastic lighted element as the plastic is quite soft and prone to scratches). Also the Sony's have a SD slot and a Memory stick Duo slot as standard
