go to www.worldofwarcraft.com (it'll change itself to us.battle.net ..
in the US) and create an account. Once you have an account, you can
digitally purchase the 'World of Warcraft Battlechest" for $19.99

This is the original game and the 1st expansion. It's a long
download/installation process, might as well schedule all night. It's
automatic, go to bed at bed time. There is a monthly fee. You can
either give them your credit card number or go to a game store and buy
cards (game cards are likely more expensive).

Having the first expansion allows you to level up to level 70, but
honestly you'll know before then if you want to keep going or not. If
you do, you can digitally buy the next two expansions (not sure about
the pricing) at your leisure (when your budget allows). But basically,
$50 (the cost of a normal game) buys the starter pack and 2 months of
play time. More than enough to decide whether to continue.

In order to join us, you'll have to select the correct server (realm).
We're on a US realm called Gnomeregan. That's the first thing it'll
ask when you create a character, so you won't miss it. Then create an
"Alliance" character (not Horde). Once you're in the game, look for
members of a guild called <Dirty Rotten Scoundrels> and ask for an
invite.

Enjoy.
