After the DOS/IBM deal, this is perhaps one of the main reasons for
Microsoft's long term success. They've bought (DirectX, Mac Office), hired
(Cutler for Windows NT, Rashid for MS Research, thousands of undergrad
programmers), and copied (IE vs. Netscape, Windows vs Mac UI) many key
developments and technologies which have allowed them to dominate for so
long.

Peopkle get this one wrong al the time.

MS did not buy Apple. They bought non-controlling shares, infusing
money into Apple, a deal made between Jobs and Gates.

After a few years (not sure how many) I believe MS sold those shares
back to Apple.

Basically, it was just a cash influx for Apple at a time when it needed it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Where did I mentioned that MS bought Apple? I was talking about the old "look and feel" lawsuit of Apple against Microsoft.

Before the final ruling, there was a very strong public feeling that Microsoft "copied" large chunks of the UI from Apple.

If you're talking about my comment about Mac Office, Microsoft's purchase of Forethought software is considered their early entry into the MS Office for Macintosh software suite.
