Not so much that publishers intentionally create these road blocks -
as there are contracts and copyright laws and the enforcement there
of. Electronics and the internet have broken down many barriers and
borders. The laws have not kept up with that changing face and in fact
their first reaction like any luddite is to try and prevent it or
micromanage it - rather than say hmmm - the world is changing, how do
we take advantage of that and get ahead of the curb (ACTA, PIPA, SOPA,
ETC. all regressive acts that seek to criminalize technological
advances, rather than seek a way to embrace them.).

So, be grateful for the fact that you can so simply get around this -
and hope that someday it won't be needed.  Protectionism is always a
bad thing in the long run, but that does not stop those who are in
power and have money from continually trying to enforce it.
