That's a tough question to answer until one defines "group stuff." Obviously, if you're taking end game raids you have to be 85 with a gear level of 372 or better. If you want to quest with other low level characters, I think about level 10 that starts to be fun and I think your first dungeon group is about level 20. For guild stuff, higher level players can help you with quests and dungeons without getting points themselves, but we do it because it's fun. If you mean free trial, you can't do much and you're capped at level 20. If you mean original WOW, you'll want the expansions soon enough.
