Unfortunately for SGU, it started off slow. With the huge success of it's predecessors, SGU was expected to be the same as the previously successful franchises. IMHO I was looking for something similar, but different with SGU, and it came through in the second Season. As you said, PJ, after episode 5/6, things starteed to kick off the way it was supposed to. THe damage had been done, however, and the executives discontinued the show, forcing a premature completion to the series, similar to what happened with the Buffy spin-off, "Angel"
