Hello,
I talked with my vet tonight about when FelV is contagious (I went because I needed to pick up Scully's ashes - quite an emotional experience. It's good to have her home though.) She said that from what she is aware of, cats that are + are always contagious, whether or not they are showing symptoms. When they are showing symptoms such as runny eyes or sneezing, other cats are more likely to come into contact with their fluids since there is more of it being tossed around. So if a cat that has been together, groomed together, eaten together for years with a + hasn't picked it up yet, it probably never will whether a + is showing symptoms or not. In my case, Rookie has had all of his shots since I've had him. She suspects the shots, plus a "natural immunity" to the virus have kept him safe.
I forgot to ask her something though. Scully would throw up all night after getting her shots each year. Does anyone know if this has anything to do with the fact that she was getting the FelV shot and was + and and we didn't know it? We assumed it was nerves from going to the vet (she didn't like it much).
Susan
