Hi all
I've been in close touch on a daily basis this week with my friend Judy
whose sweet little shizu (sp?) dog, Moo Shui, was discovered very recently
to have advanced cancer and who from everything she tells me today, seems to
be at the point of departing.
Judy may have a housecall vet come today, or maybe it will be tomorrow,
depending on Moo Shui's deteriorating condition.
I know many of you, unlike myself or Judy, have already had to go through
this distressing experience with a beloved dog, perhaps more than once.
As I have learned over the past few months, vets are not always all-knowing,
all-compassionate, and since Judy wants Moo Shui to pass at home, she will
in all probability be dealing with a housecall vet she has never used
before.
My question is: Is there anything I can advise Judy to ask the vet to do to
make Moo Shui's last minutes as comfortable as possible, when the time
comes, e.g. sedation?
Also, do you have any advice on how Judy herself should make Moo Shui's last
hours as comfortable as possible? For the first time, she just wants to be
on her own today, and is hiding behind the couch. She hasn't eaten for 36
hours I believe, and any water she has drunk today (not much) is apparently
going straight through her. her breathing isn't labored at the moment.
Any advice you can give I will pass on to Judy.
Thanks so much in advance.
Kerry
