steroid side effects are usually only long-term.  the only short-term side effects is that every once in a blue moon a cat gets diabetes from one or two shots of depomedrol, but usually even that side effect is after months of use.  If there is lymphoma or a hyper-immune reaction, steroids can help immensely and nothing else (except chemo if lymphoma) will.
