My NIcky developed problems with constipation when he was about 16. Started out taking him to the vet for enemas. That was truly awful for a shy kitty, and actually, one time it just about killed him, I stayed up with him all night squirting water in his mouth every 2 hours. I stopped the enemas at the vets and became very wary of them. I determined to handle it myself. I started out trying to give him lower bowel enemas myself (not inserting the long tube). It can indeed help to squirt a little water in, because it starts a reflex that can help, also if they're dehydrated it can provide needed fluids. But also requires a cooperative cat!

Ultimately, I used sub-q fluids daily, not too much though for the older cat - I did anywhere from 50-70cc at one session, daily. Orally I used Lactulose about twice a day, maybe 3 times.. Also I used homeopathic Nux Vomica. It all worked great.

Best of luck,

Gloria

Hi guys, I haven't posted for a long time, but
we're all still around. My oldest girl, Purrl,
who is 17, has developed megacolon. I know
nothing about this disease. The doc has her on
Propulsid (it's now illegal for humans, but my
locaL compounding pharmacist can mAke it for
animals) and I give hjer sub q fluids every day,
but what else can my friends, the real experts,
tell me? Thanks! Luv, Nancy and her MC
