Actually, he had the most damage—I had never seen him that frightened! Anyway, I give him 1 tablet of 10mg about 3 hours before we go. I tried vet instructions of 1 ½ hours but it worked better when he curled up and went to sleep before we went… Now this is for fairly short vet visit and he just goes home & sleeps it off. It also let me clip his nails—something we still haven’t mastered…

Poor Big Boy, and poor
you! Do you happen to know what amount of Ace you give your kids for the
desired effect? The first time I took Big Boy to the vet was without anything and he totally freaked out! The vet tech somehow let him go & he literally climbed the wall to get himself wedged behind a bookcase. It was the one and only time he ever bit me & that was because I was stupid enough to slide my hand behind the bookcase to try & nudge him out. Now go from that to a cat who was frightened but stayed calm & the difference was the ace promazine (may not be spelling right). I’ve used it 3 times with him and while he is completely alert and awake, knows what’s going on, he is just mellow enough to let the vet do whatever is needed including drawing blood. I give him the pill and put the carrier out next to him and he just pops in & goes to sleep. He’s not thrilled when I sneak up to zipper it shut but he doesn’t thrash around either… I’m not big on giving unecessary meds but it made all the difference in the world for him… Just my experience….

I am so very sorry to hear what happened to Snowball - it's so sad - I know there is always such a concern for anethesia and surgery - I go back and forth every time. -----Original Message-----
