It can also indicate stress, or rapid weight loss. My Ursula had her
3rd eyelids showing in both eyes for a couple of weeks when she was
about a year old. I took her to the vet and they couldn't figure out
why. No signs of infection, otherwise healthy, it really freaked me
out. I applied Terramycin (cat eye antibiotic ointment), as a
precaution and kept her eyes clean with saline dampened cotton balls. I
started spoiling her even more than usual, giving in to her every whim,
and it just went away by itself and hasn't happened again. I was
friendly with an AC at the time, and she told me Ursula was upset about
some new arrivals in the house and "she doesn't want to see what's going
on". I sort of laughed that explanation off at the time, but I still
don't know what caused the nictating, or why it cleared up. Ursula is
negative.
