Another thing I used to do to help with ants at our place in the lake is this. I would wipe all the counters, doorframes, etc.... with soapy water and not rinse them. Use a lemon scented dishwashing liquid or lemon scented bleach or lemon whatever. Evidently insects don't like the citrus scent.
I have also been told (from someone on this list?) that peppermint oil will deter mice. Just put it on cotton balls. I went to the store and they were out of it. In the meantime my mice were 'disposed' of by the cats. ewwww!
