for the non-electric solution: a bag of beans or rice, heated in the microwave for 3-4 minutes (with a small container for water to add humidity) then wrapped in a towel will hold heat for hours (you have to test what you use to see how long it stays warm....)--better than a towel, find an old cat bed with a zipper, and put the beans/rice between the stuffing so it's more comfortable to lay on... there are also frisbie-looking hard plastic disks (i can't remember the brand name, of course...) that you heat in the microwave and slip under a bed that do the same thing--they say they stay warm for a really long time, but the only person i know who actually had one said they lost the heat quickly.... however, she'd tried the first generation of them so they may have been redesigned....
