Dear Terrie: Bless you for making Ling's final months of life ones in which he was able to know love and receive the care he needed. There is a limit to what we can do, however, and when that time comes, sometimes the kindest thing we can do is help them across. Even if his previous guardian was not able to properly care for him before his/her own demise, he/she cared enough to entrust his care to you when he/she crossed over and you have fulflilled that role admirably. Now Ling's spirit can rejoin his former guardian and be freed from a failing body. I am sure he is thankful for the love and care you showed to him and understands why you have chosen to help him across to the other side.
