Jen,
Oh, I am heartbroken for him!!
I've seen too many cases of FIP and unfortunately, I have no advice on
"successful" treatments.
Are they DEFINITE it is FIP, as there are hundreds of corona viruses, and
FIP is only one. My Gus had an absolutely high corona titre, but not FIP.
Is it the wet form, and did they draw fluid from abdomen?? High
fever???
From all I have read on FIP, I was under the impression the only definitive
diagnosis is by necropsy.
However, w/ the "wet" form, the symptoms are much more apparent than the
"dry" form.
According to Anitra Frazier, (author of "The New Natural Cat"), chances of
recovery are 50-50. She actually consults w/ Dr. Pitcairn by phone for FIP
cases.
She advises treating and alleviating any symptoms cat is showing, ie; URI,
Fluid retention requires diuretics, most often lasix. But, there is a loss of
potassium w/ lasix & she suggests Adolph's Salt Substitute(potassium
chlloride), 1/16 tspn. each meal. Also, 1/16 tspn. ascorbic acid
OR 250 units Vit. C.
She reccommends Parsley Tea,as it is a natural
diuretic & also replces some nutrients washed out by diuretic action.
Advices a pureed raw food diet, 4-6 small meals a day.
Adding to the meals, 1/4 tspn. digestive enzymes, the above mentioned amt.
ascorbic acid or Vit C.(NO SODIUM ASCORBATE!!), 1/8 tspn. liq. chorophyll, 1/4
tspn. liquid acidophilus,
10 mg. CoEnzyme Q10 & her "garlic Condiment-1/8 tspn.
Recipe:
1/8 tspn distilled or spring water (My vet says USE SPRING
WATER ONLY, because distilled water loses nutrients in process)
1/8 tspn. Tamari sauce
1/4 tspn. fresh crushed raw garlic
Mix together & let stand 2-5 minutes.
Flower remedies suggested:
Mimulus - to quell fears concerning body functions
Olive - bolster energy
Gorse - banish despair
Some herbs to cosider:
Red Clover
Pau D' Arco
Reishi Mushroom (Exc. for auto-immune diseases)
Burdock (blood cleanser, diuretic)
Astraglus -(strngthens immune system, promotes healing, strenghthens
resistance to disease, improves digestion)
Alfalfa _ (Fresh sprouts are beat added to food) - high in vit. &
mineral, nourishes entire system
Also, one of our vets suggests LIQUID KYOLIC AGED
GARLIC, 5 CC, every 2 hours 5X a day.
We did use this on several FIP cats, and although they ultimately passed,
it DID prolong their lifes for awhile......
Now, here is what Dr. Pitcairn advises for FIP:
Phosphorus 30C - (Homeopathic schedule 3)
Sepia 6 (Cuttlefish) - (Homeopathic Schedule 6a)
Nitricum acidum 30C -(Homeopathic Schedule 4)
Ferrum phosphoricum 6X - (Homeopathic Schedule 1)
He has also used Arsenicum Album, actually giving
ONE initial dose & following up w/ another dose 2 mos. later.
If you don't have access to the homeopathic dosing schedules, let me know,
and I'll e-mail you.
There is a wealth of info. in both Frazier's & Pitcairn's books. Most
book stores carry them, even libraries!
This is just some advice, and for sure your friend should consult a
holistic/homeopathic vet to work TOGETHER w/ his
allopathic vet.
Basically, FIP is the most heartbreaking disease. To me, it is MUCH worse
than Felv. I lost 2 of my own cats w/ the "dry" form, so it was such a shocker,
since they had NO visual symptoms.
Then, I fostered a kitten, my first Magpie, and worked like hell to pull
her thru. She was so tiny, barely 2 lbs., and had the worst URI & high
temp. When we got her over that, she started fluid retention and we "drained"
the fluid every other day...It broke my heart, she was a little trooper. I
carried her in a small basket, she had gotten so weak & lethargic. She
finally refused to eat, and was in such obviuous discomfort from the fluid, as
it reapidly increased, and drawing the fluid is a STRESSFUL
ORDEAL, and one of the most important things for FIP cats (and
Felv/FIV) is to keep them as stress free as possible.
On Magpie's last trip to vet, she looked at me w/ her golden eyes (she was
an adorable tortie!!), and I knew she was telling me, "NO more Mom, please let
me go".
So I helped my Magpie cross The Bridge to join all my other
furangels....
Have your friend contact The American Holistic Veterinary Association, 2214
Old Emmorton Rd., Bel Air, Md. 21014. Phone is: (925)299-2954
E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Web addy: www.ahva.com
They will refer him to a vet that will specialize in FIP...it will most
likely be phone consults, BUT I must say, I do use this place, but when my Jesse
had pancreatic cancer they referred me to a holistic oncologist in Va. We did
all our "visits" via phone...He was wonderful. They will direct you in the right
direction.
I will pray for this baby..... I DO BELIEVE IN
MIRACLES........
Just wish we'd see more of them....
If there's any more info. I can help you w/ please feel free to e-mail me
off-list.
Best of Luck,
Fondly,
Patti
Also, for Belle, Jerry, Cleo, Bullit, Tippy...just a few of my shelter
