Aw Amy, I'm so very sorry about your home's loss of Rocket. I love
Great Danes. They are such gentle giants. Living with one is like
living with a human with four legs. I know, that you know, there is no
way to ever "replace" Rocket. You'll very soon have a new addition to
the family to ease your pain and encourage laughter and joy. I'm sure
your beloved Rocket will be watching over your new family member, maybe
he thought he could do a better job from the other side as your baby's
very special Guardian Angel. When the time is right to bring another
deserving animal into your life, you'll know. They'll probably come to
you, the way so many of our special friends seem to do. As far as
adopting a puppy at the same time as giving birth, the thought seems
rather overwhelming to me. My s-i-l did just that though. My advice to
her at the time, was something along the lines of, "Are you nuts?"
Puppies are so much work and, of course, so are babies. It didn't make
sense to me why she would chose such a hectic time to add to her
responsibilities and work load. Of course, she didn't listen to me, and
she was never sorry! Do think about contacting the Great Dane rescue in
your area. Giving an older dog, or an adolescent a chance at a new life
is so rewarding. It has the added benefit of not dealing with
housebreaking/behavioral issues too. Keep your heart open, but use your
head to find the perfect dog for your household. I've no doubt he's out
there and will be thrilled to be welcomed into such a loving home as
yours, whenever that may be.

Well I'm just writing to let you know that we lost our
Great Dane this week. I've lost so many cats to
leukemia that I thought I was prepared for this but I
wasn't. It's awful. Rocket did everything with us,
even squeezed into our bed at night despite there
being no room with us and 5 kitties. Rocket isn't a
cat but he was as much part of our family as our five
kitties who now miss him terribly.
I also have one question. I'm heartbroken and I miss
him terribly and want to go out and get another one.
Whenever I lose a kitty, I always go find another one
to rescue. I'm not replacing the one that is lost but
it helps me move on. I'm expecting a baby Sep 6th and
everybody tells me I'm crazy to think about a puppy
but our house is so empty without a Great Dane and the
cats miss him as much as we do. Has anybody ever
raised a puppy and a newborn at the same time? Any
suggestions or thoughts? Is it selfish to bring a
puppy in right now?
