I would use Program instead. It is a pill that is a flea birth control hormone. It is not supposed to have any side effects for the cat, and is given once per month. I have seen it work wonders.  Adult fleas die quickly after biting, and then their eggs are infertile. It pretty much halts infestations. I do not trust the chemicals that go on topically, at least with my positives, as some cats have had bad reactions to them and I worry that the chemicals might be a lot for a compromised immune system.
