I went and saw Ziggy today at the kitty hospital (actually visited twice). His hematocrit when he went in on wednesday night was 6%!!! IT didnt even show up on the normal blood tests they had to run a special test! With his blood transfusion its up to about 14% they will probably give him another transfusion before he leaves the hospital on sunday. His bone marrow aspiration came back and he does not have cancer but his immune system is suppressed. I talked to the doctor and he should be relased on sunday.... ill have to give him prednisone twice a day and he will start on his interferon again as soon as they can get it from the pharmacy (its tuna flavored!). So the vet said his prognosis is poor but as long as i can bring him home for a week or two i will be happy. He may do better than that he has been positive since he was born... he was a rescue cat... i found him in a chicken coop with no food no water and no litter box and the person who "rescued" him said that he was the only one in the litter that survived and his cat mommy was dead laying next to him when she found Ziggy. So hes a trooper and hes been through alot. When he was about 6 months old i had him neutered and tested for FeLV and he was poisitve, the vet told me he would live about 6 months maybe. That vet was horrible. Didnt care about him and told me to make him "comfortable" Since he tested positive ive been taking him to Falls Rd. Animal Hospital in Balt. Md. which i highly reccommend. They have given him extra good care and i was happy that when he was so lethargic on wednesday that at 1130 at night i could take him to the vet and we were seen right away. Hes had a good stay there, one of the vet assistants even gave him some shrimp today which made him a happy boy! So.... He should be home tomorrow and him and i have a long road ahead of us filled with shots and pills but hes a trooper and im sure he will get to spend as much time as possible at home with his cat brother and sister and his mommy. I'll keep you updated on his condition. P.S. even if you have a purebred cat get them their FeLV shots. My mom had a purebred tonkinese that was her baby. Her absolute life. Ziggy spent some time with my parents while i was finishing up school and about 8 months later "Tonkie" came down with a lymphosarcoma and tested positive for FeLV. He was a purebred raised by a vet and breeder but never recieved his FeLV vaccines, which is normal because you have to ask for that shot. About 2 weeks after that he tested positive he passed into kitty heaven, and my mom got 2 more tonkinese from the same breeder (Noonie and Toonces (SNL references)). My dad and i checked the shot records from the breeder and they have not received their FeLV vaccines, which basically means FeLV shots are not protocol and my Ziggy gave Tonkie his FeLV, which took his life very quickly so make sure to vaccinate!!!!!! Best Wishes to everyone and their kitties, as I laugh and cry about my Ziggy I will think about all of you guys going through the same thing.
Laura, Fuzz, Alex and of course Ziggy!
