There is also a wonderful book called Cat Heaven by Cynthia Rylant. It's a children's book. It always make me cry, but in a good way. It gives me peace. You might try that.
I'm a teacher and I also talk to my students about how if animals lived as long as we did who would there be to take care of them. and how God (we can't say God) sends them to us to take care of them while they are here and that we can take care of more because they don't live as long as we do. That's not exactly how I say all that, but you get the gist.

Kayte,
Your little boy sounds so adorable. I liked Marylyn's
advice on reading him the Rainbow Bridge poem. It's
really good, and simple enough that a child his age
might understand fairly well. I think you are wise to
wait to see if Crackers clears the virus. Then, you
can go crazy finding him a mate or two. Although,
it's been my experience that I don't get to wait once
I decide I want to take in another kitty. They always
find me first!
