Way in the past, about 7 years ago, I had a little group of cats who lived with each other in a stable indoor situation. Two of the cats tested FeLv+ when they were very old. I couldn't figure it out because all their lives they tested negative. I guess the infection was hiding in the bone marrow or somewhere and didn't resurface until they were 14 years old and began suffering from kidney failure. They died very quickly. I tested all their mates three years in a row and no one ever tested positive. I still have two of the mates here in my house. They still test negative. I think it depends on the age and health of the cat whether they will get FeLv when exposed. All the cats who were living with Twerp and Tiger were adults past age 2 years and all groomed, slept with and ate with each other. They were all closely bonded to each other. FeLv is contagious but it's not something that should prompt a veterinarian to tell a client to kill the cat immediately. I just get so disgusted with that type of attitude.

Yes Joey was PCR tested because him and Bailey (FeLV+) were very close, he was negative, him, Bailey and the rest of the gang all lived together for 11 years and nobody ever got it from Bailey.

Has anyone ever gotten a cat tested with the PCR?
