I can't really answer all your questions - I know a
lot of them were rhetorical anyway - but I do have a
suggestion about the above.
What my vet did when I had to give Stormy insulin was
to make up a 'fake' bottle of insulin with either
distilled water or Ringer's in it, and then while she
watched, both my SO and I gave Stormy several shots each.
The water won't hurt the cat, and you get practise doing
it repeatedly while being watched, so you don't worry
about doing it wrong - your vet will stop you if you
are.
