I know. If I would have been there I would have not let him have that cat
without a fight. My sister is just not that way. She freaked out and
started crying and didn't know what to do. He intimidated and scared her.
She is an elementary school teacher, so that should give you some idea of her
temperment. If I had not been around, she would have let them put Andy down
too because she assumes they know more than she does. He very much has that
"its a stray and not your pet so what do you care?" mentality.
I would have taken that carrier since he had already put the cat back in it
and told him he would have to call the cops because I was walking out that
door with the cat. I would have insisted that Animal Control be called. My
sister did call AC and they were supposed to call her and tell her what the
results of the test were. BTW, the only way to determine if an animal is
rabid is by cutting off the head. As far as I know, there have been no
medical advances to change that. But I would have INSISTED that the cat be
quarantined at AC or the vet if need be. After 10 days, advanced rabies
would set in and she would be foaming at the mouth .etc if she were indeed
rabid. If that happened, fine, put her to sleep. If not, then we didn't
unnecessarily kill an innocent animal.
My main issue is that the cat had not bitten anyone or shown agressive
signs. If they bite a human, they do immediately PTS and test them b/c the
treatment is so painful for the person and can't wait for a quarantine
period. BUT SHE DIDN'T BITE ANYONE!
I can't express all this to my sister because she already feels so guilty
and upset. She just kept saying she wished I had been there or lived in town
so she could have called me and had me come deal with it. I don't want to
rub salt in a wound when what's done is done.
My stomach had been in knots since she told me this. God I wish I could
have stopped it! It is such a helpless frustrating feeling and there is
NOTHING I can do to change it. This is just horrible.
To add insult to injury, they kept her cat carrier. She has to get that
back and find out the test results, but they are not cooperating. I will be
in Arlington/DFW tomorrow for 2 interviews and just might have to pay him a
visit...
