Del - the PCR is the 3rd FeLV test (altho PCR is used for many other
diseases esp. early detection of HIV). Anyway, it is Polymerase Chain
Reaction, which detects viral nucleic acid sequences in a cell.. basically
it looks for the DNA of the FeLV virus. It can be used to satisfy discordant
results or to detect FeLV that is restricted to a particular tissue (such as
bone marrow). It will also detect a latent FeLV virus - both ELISA and IFA
will not detect a latent virus. A latent infection usually follows transient
infection for 4 to 9 months
but proviral DNA remains in lymphoid or marrow tissue. The PCR will detect
this.
