i think it's *extremely* ignorant.

it's ignorant, and very unfortunate, to think that every cat, not to mention every special needs cat, can be saved. i hate that, but it's a fact. we all do what we can. but saying it's "ridiculous" to fear the specter of euthanasia is just plain unrealistic.

fortunately, it's a moot point at this point, but your situation was not an option in this case.

if you read my post, you'd know that i would never put down a cat "just because it was positive" either. i never even thought of having them put down once i heard the test results. i have fought very hard for these kitties, and had to argue with the vet to get them earmite treatment, flea treatment, and kitten shots. they are healthy, happy boys. it was only when i was told that i couldn't keep them that i feared the worst. and that's a very real and valid fear. most people around here don't think the way i do.

i had been keeping the postive cats and the negative cat separated and the negative had been vaccinated. i was happy with the situation and so were the cats. my negative cat is also a "special needs" cat in a different sort of way. she is TERRIFIED of people. she's now six; i adopted her from a kill-shelter when she was two. she had been declawed and then abandoned and i don't know what else was done to her. it took several weeks to even get her to let me pet her. she was not feral, just very very frightened. she gets along really well with other cats but i'm the only person she trusts. i doubt she could adjust to another owner.

my apartment complex changed its pet policy recently and became much more restrictive. exotic pets (which included ferrets and some types of FISH) are not allowed. my building, which had been a pets-ok building, became a cats-only building and the people beneath me left because they were told that they had to give up their dog. the number of cats allowed changed.

i don't have the resources to leave right now, nor to break the lease.

on a routine maintenance call (changing the furnace filter), maintenance reported that i now had three cats instead of one. i was told i had to get rid of the cats over the weekend or go. i managed to argue them into a week. even when i told them that i didn't think i could place the cats in that time, that's all they would give me. "the cats have to be gone in a week or you have to go."

i tried EVERYTHING. fortunately, it worked. i also work full-time and live alone, and i don't have all day to make phone calls, nor do i have anyone to do it for me. i did all i could when i could.

the kittens are being taken by relatives (who, when asked, at first said they couldn't help but then changed their minds). they live several states away but the trouble is no object. i am going to look for a place with a better pet policy when my lease is up and i hope to have them back with me then.

another couple came through with an offer, too. hooray for plan b!

it's easy to say "where there's a will, there's a way" but it's not always true in the real world, unfortunatealy.

When I was in that situation I kept the positive cat and kept my negative, healthy cats because there was no way on earth I would have put down a cat just because it was positive. I don't think that's ignorant. Where there's a will there's a way.

luckily, i did find good homes for both.

but i have to say that if you think it's "ridiculous" to even think about
having to put them down, then you are VERY ignorant.

do you know how overfull no-kill shelters are? do you know what a small
percentage of those even TAKE FeLV+ cats? do you know how long the wait list
is for foster homes and how backed up those are, too? do you know how many
people are unwilling to care for FeLV+ cats, and how many animal lovers
would love to but are unABLE to help because they already have healthy cats?
do you know how many vets REFUSE TO SPAY, NEUTER, OR EVEN GIVE SHOTS to
FeLV+ cats because all they want to do is put them down?

obviously, you don't.

i'm really surprised to see such blatant ignorance on this list.

educate yourself before you post. please.
