Kerry..You took the words out of my mouth...From what I have read I am a strong believer that the best defense is to provide a healthy and loving life for the cat and they seem to have a good chance at a reasonably long healthy life....It would apear that Kathy has been doing just that.....

I also like the idea that you can now bring Meowser home...There are so many FeLV+ kitties being needless PTS becouse there are no homes for them...Even if she is in a no kill shelter she is taking a spot that another that other wise may not get...

Hello Kathy
My heart goes out to you, I know how devastated you must feel. Small comfort, I know, but it sounds to me from everything I've read or learned in the past six months about FeLV that you did everything right. It sounds highly likely that Killian already had FeLV. With the good care and nutrition FeLV kitties can live long, otherwise healthy, quality lives --your Killian is obviously being well looked after!

Subject: Older cat with Felv

Hello!  I am new to the board.  I want to share my story and ask for some advice.  I really hope that someone can answer my questions.
We have a 10 year old female cat named Killian.  My husband has had her since she was a kitten.  I love her so much!  She is so friendly and sweet.  Well a couple months ago, my husband found a really friendly stray cat and brought her home.  We kept her in the basement so that she would be seperated from Killian.  The door to the basement was kept closed.  I made an appointment for the stray to see the vet the next morning.  I named her Meowser.
So at the vets we discovered that she had leukemia.  I was devastated! Unfortunatley we couldn't keep Meowser because of Killian.  I searched hard and found a no kill cageless shelter that takes in cats with leukemia.  It was 2 hours away!  It was so hard to give her up!  I cried a lot and keep in touch with the shelter to see how she is doing.
Now, a couple days ago Killian threw up and the next day threw up again for no apparent reason.  I made an appointment for her at the vets.  The vet said that she looked healthy and wanted to take a blood test because of Killian's age.  Well, it turns out that she is healthy in every way except for the fact that she has feline leukemia!!!!!  How could this happen?  What did we do wrong????
The vet said that Killian may have had leukemia all her life.  My husband thinks that she was tested for it in the past but can't find any record of it.  I am so worried and scared for her!  Is it possible that she contracted Leukemia from Meowser?  How contagious is it?  We did not let Killian into the basement until 2 weeks after Meowser was gone.  Her food and litter box were gone.  Perhaps we missed a spot where she had urinated?  Or when I went into the basement to spend time with Meowser and then came back upstairs and played with Killian, could I have spread it to Killian?  I always washed my hands but didn't change my clothes.  What about ear mites?  Meowser had ear mites.  Could they have gotten to Killian and spread the virus?  The vet didn't say that Killian had ear mites.
Or is it possible that Killian has had this all of her life?  She never gets sick, she is very healthy!  Are her chances of survival slim if she recently contracted it because of her age?
What would u recommend as my next step to take?  I would sure appreciate it if someone could help answer some of my questions.  I am heartbroken over this!
Sorry so long!  Thanks for listening!
Kathy
P.S.- She hasn't vomitted again and seems to be doing fine!
