Chris,

It sounds to me anyway, that she may have a blockage--- and the diarrhea, from pushing and straining to force some stool out from around it.  This would explain the hiccups, it happens from straining...vomiting is next.

What kind of litter do you use?  That  clumping stuff is a horror to a cat who might ingest too much of it while cleaning.  It can form a hard mass and block up the internal workings just like cement. (Which is why its not recommended to be used with nursing cats and small kittens.....it can, and has on several occasions- killed.)  The block can sometimes be removed with an emima & addition of fibre caps to the diet, but DON"T do this without consulting with your vet, esp. if she already has diarreah (your cat...not the vet..we aren't concerned with her bowel problems)!  (Lord help me, I'm starting to write like W. Bush speaks!)

As for the roaming from the litterbox:

The hissing when you put her back in the box was just her way of saying, "YEAH ma, I know where I'm supposed to do it...but I have to walk to make it come out!"  -Think of cats as adolescents.

Or....if she's real brave, like my hellhound, the gas from the bowel problems, could just be scarring the hell out of her!  My dog contracted lymes disease and had a HORRORIBLE bout of month + long diarreah, until we (three vets and myself) FINALLY figured it out.  She'd "toot" when she strained and it would -ah!  I know this isn't funny...really...but it is looking back...she'd toot when she strained and it would quite literarly scare the crap outta her!  If I hadn't have had her on a lease she'd have been in Canada by the second day !
Good luck, keep us posted!

Chris--I would call the vet asap and repeat everything you said here. Something's not right, and I would hope her new symptoms (the diarrhea as she ran around the apt) will clue the vet in to what's wrong, and what tests, if any, need to be run. Good luck -- please keep us posted. Kerry

Subject: Can't quite figure out what's wrong==anyone have suggestions...

Ive posted before about Tucson, 5+ year old recently FELV diagnosed and my efforts to get her to accept Big Boy, my stray FELV+.  Heres my current problem.  Within the last week, Tucson started urinating out of the litter boxsomething she only has done very occasionally before.  Also, she began having what almost looked like hiccups she would sort of gag like maybe she had something stuck in her throat but not throw anything up.  I took her to vet Friday as I was concerned she might have URI but he checked her out and she was OK (no temp, no inflamed glands, no sounds in  lungs, etc).  He thought she might have hairballsshe is long hair and no matter how much I brush her, shes always shedding.   She has not lost weightin fact she gained again to 16lbs!  Ive been watching how much she eats but she was never one to more around too much! only to jump onto laps!  At first, I attributed urinating to being annoyed at BB (were making a big push at gradual reintro) but tonight she really did something Im not sure about.  She seems to have diahrea and just ran around the apt having little accidents all over.  I finally caught her and put her in her box (which I had just cleaned & changed litter) & she jumped right out, hissing, and fussing and all.  I managed to clean her up and cut some of the hair around her bottom-I do that periodically as its just too long for her to keep clean. She started that gaggingher whole body twiches almost like hiccups Anyway, she really was freaking out and seemed very upset and uncomfortableand it took a long time to calm her down. Im going to call the vet again tomorrow?? Should I ask about urine and/or stool sample tests????  I gave her some Petrimal tonight to see if maybe it is just hairball but Ive never seen her do that sort of gagging/ ! ; Im a newbie to FELV issues and maybe Im overreacting but I just want to play it safe Any thoughts????
