I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH:

 

I'm speaking from experience here: ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS CHECK OUT ANY AND ALL "SANCTUARIES" BEFORE DELIVERING A CAT.....PREF. W/OUT THE CAT IN TOW!

 

I had the experience:  SEVERAL rescuers and other clean (showcase) shelters that recommended a wonderful woman to me who had set up a sanctuary in her "fixed-up" garage on her farm.  She had a EXTENSIVE history of taking in strays, kids and animals, and was a volunteer for SEVERAL wonderful organizations.  She has a very loving heart and is a wonderful person..........but......upon delivering a FELV + cat to her (after driving 2+ hrs.) I was horrified by the conditions of her "sanctuary", level upon levels for the cats to climb, but all rusty, dirty metal, the smell of cat urine was so bad, it was actually a physical entity!, She had heaters everywhere, but exposed insulation where the cats could disappear for days or weeks at a time, and the food dishes didn't look like they had been cleaned in years!  Hair just everywhere, and while she did medicate them, (self -done, no vets) many were sick, congested, runny eyes and noses, matted fur.  ! There were 7 when I dropped off the cat I had found, and 14 when I picked him up...all in a one car garage.  (this doesn't count the "too numberous to count" animals living in the house as foster pets, approx.30 dogs and they didn't know how many cats.  She means well!  She and her husband have wonderful souls and hearts....But way too many animals to take care of humanly, she couldn't even tell me how many she had total.  I "had" to leave the poor shaking cat there b/c there was no where else to take him (it was a weekend so I couldn't even board him at a vet's.)  I cried all the way home and for days afterward!  It took me three months more, but I found a WONDERFUL home for him!  Simms was rescued from the rescue and placed in a great home.  While she too has a lot of animals, she is smart enough not to take in more than she can actually CARE for, medicate and clean up after.  Plus, she makes the time to! have a one-on-one relationship with each of her charges...(Yes Anne this is about you!)  I thank God for her every day.  I couldn't ask for a better home for Simms.  (FYI:  It took me a Total of 9 months to find the right home for Simms.) And now not only have I found Simms a FAMILY, but I have another friend to constantly bug by e-mail!!!

 

Oh, and during this experience, I found out that one of the absolutely BEAUTIFULLY maintained shelters that I was considering placing Simms in (and would have to send monthly support for his care as well as several hundred dollars to initially place there, etc...) actually sent animals to that overburdened "home" sanctuary that Simms went to, when they needed to make room for another resident, but....the home sanctuary never saw a dime of the $$ that people who had released the cats in the first place were paying the official sanctuary.........(I wonder if cats whose benefactors had missed support payments were sent to her.)
