I've had Jelly roll and the other two felv+ cats on megaC plus, vit E, ambrotose and a chinese herb  from my alternative medicine Chinese vet(who unfortunately on my last visit, had two cats coming in to be declawed and did nothing to talk to his customers about alternatives to that so I have lost faith in him). I even researched what supplements to give my dog that had cancer and I feel it helped her live a month longer and relatively pain free. that said, since Jely Roll at 2 1/2 yrs old STILL got sick with all my precautions and had to be on IV for 2 days to bring down fever -the inteferon and the two antibiotics seemed to have helped him. He's running around, eating well, being affectionate. Both the cancer group and lymhoma group told me to go to a specialist after getting back lab work from my regular vet who suggested chemo for what she felt was lymphoma. the specialist did more tests and now has suggested chemo and the prednisone. Unfotunately I've not been successful finding a good homeopathic vet. (Long Island seems to attract some crazies--I've gone to two--one was actually set up in business by a puppy mill store! and the other sells his own mixture of dry pet food that sits around in a warehouse then is brought into his office where one is practically attacked by moths from the food).  I appreciate your concerns, they are mine too regarding prednisone however unless I can find a reputable alternative medicine vet, I have made the decision to follow what this specialist suggests. I feed no dry food to my cats and have had to stick to premium canned food-Eagle Brand, Petguard, Wellness and the like---because of an erratic schedule and a petsitter who will not feed raw never mind that the majority of the cats won't eat it and I'm just under alot of stress to sit down and be patient right now slowly integrating it into their foods.
I would never call you or anyone on this list a flake, please believe me.  I remember reading about DMG also. however right now since I have no reputable homeopathic vet to consult with, I do not want to give additional supplements in addition to what the specialist wants Jelly Roll on because i don't know how they will all interact. I've stopped his ambrotose also. (that was another sore point with the chinese vet--he was charging double the retail cost of what I found it online for).  I'm cooking up chicken livers for Jelly Roll and he's also on Pet Tinic for anemia.
I wish I could find a reputable homepathic vet --the prednisone worries me but I can't keep beating myself up about this. I already carry around alot of guilt that no matter what I did, I couldn't stop my mom's decline from Parkinson's in her last 2 1/2 years and no matter what I did, I couldn't save my beloved 14 yr old lab mix from her cancer.
You mention diet support--what suggestions do you have? I do have a call into my specialist about  the prednisone also. All I know is right now Jelly Roll is eating and acting pretty good for a chronic sick cat.  Can I give him acidophilus as a probiotic for the antibiotics he's taking?
I'm just so exhausted. please dont' misconstue any of the above as any kind of anger or yelling at you, cherri. it's not meant that way at all. I really do appreciate your taking the time to relate your experiences. wish I could find a vet like you did so you could bring your furbaby back from the brink like you did.
kindly,
Barbara

The lab results for his bone marrow aspir. came back---the specialist said he has a rare disease---"chronic leukemia" which is more treatable than "acute leukemia" and "lymphoma"  In addition to the interferon and the 2 other antibiotics he was put on by the regular vet, the spec. also wants him on prednisone.  the vet feels this is "infinitely more treatable" and that it's a small cell cancer.  chemo starts next week. (Seems even the specialists are not certain which protocol for treating cats with this as they do know what to give dogs with this disease). Meanwhile Jelly Roll seems to be feeling fine and eating well.
Has anyone else ever had their cat diagnosed with "chronic"?
I just wanted to add that typical vets really had a poor prognosis for my leuk kitty, they suggested euthinizing him....but even with a crit of 9 we wanted to try. I took him to a homeopathic vet who gave me diet instructions, DMG, flower essences and cautioned me about giving him antibiotics.....I certianlly would not give him pred...this will shut down his immune system totally and leave him open to so many other infections.....you need to get his body to produce more red blood cells...if its Feline Leuk that is causing the leuk you need him to also fight the virus.  Feed this cat's body for health....boost his ability to produce red blood cells and let his body battle the problem, you have to support his body for it to do this...many many things that may be suggested may hinder this process :(

No Im not a flake.....and yes I support western medicine....but with the problem you are posting about I dont think what they are doing will help, I fear it will make the situation worse and ruin the cat's already probably miserable mood causing depression which is not inducive to healing :(  If our kitty had not gotten the lymph nacer he would still be here...he was one of those that did get cancer though and we lost him BUT his crit went from 9 toI believe 32 with just diet support and DMG (and some vits) alone....he was improving and had beaten the animia...the vet that saw him last was in awe that he had done that and wanted to know where to get the DMG for her positive patients.....Errol had a great 3 mths after he crashed where he was happy, eating, putting on weight and sneaking out of the house (to our horror)  he was back to normal, and then crashed again with the lymphoma.....Im glad I handled it the way I did cause I have never seen an animal so very sick...and he did get better for 3 mths....

sorry Im rambling....
