Well...
Just to play devil's advocate -
They've been playing with the breeds of both dogs and cats for years.
Witness the pekes and persians who's faces have become much more extreme.
And in order to effect a change, genetics _must_ be modified.

I would much rather they play around with genetically modifying immune
systems so that the viral nasties (FeLV included) can't get a foothold.

Or maybe modifying the reproductive systems so that dogs and cats only
have 1 season/year instead of many.  At least then the numbers of
euthanized pets would approach zero.
