I have a friend in Pennsylvania who had a cat who was terminally ill. Her vet actually gave her some oral meds to give to the cat to allow him to gently go to sleep and never wake up. My friend said she gave the medicine and held her baby for the next hour or so and he slowly began to breathe at less frequent intervals and then stopped breathing at all. She said it was very peaceful. It was the middle of the night and summertime. The windows were all open and they could hear the chirping of the crickets and the rocking of the rocking chair. She rocked her baby and cooed to him and then he was gone, very much without incident, very peaceful.
I was shocked at first when she told me of this and I don't think I would have been brave enough to do it, in case something went wrong, but doesn't it sound so peaceful and wonderful?
By the way, does anyone know why cats want to go outside when they are ready to die? I find that interesting and have always wondered.
