The pills do sound wonderful, however, with some animals, there can be a reaction and the poor thing will vomit them up, and you have to take them, shaking and trembling to the vet anyway to have it done right, so be prepared...just in case.
Cats are loath to show injury or pain, and tend, maybe more than most animals to wander away in an attempt to die alone- behaviorists say it is because instinctually they would be attacked by other cats, even pride members, if they appear weak or sick. The healthier members do this to protect the rest of the pride from any illness that might spread.
Having been through several hospice situations this year, I'll quote one of the hospice nurses: "It is easier for the one who is about to die, to let go, if they are not being continually touched or spoken to....for some reason, it is just easier to let go. Perhaps it is because there are loved ones passed reaching out to them...its easier to go if no one is holding you back."

I have a friend in Pennsylvania who had a cat who was terminally ill. Her vet actually gave her some oral meds to give to the cat to allow him to gently go to sleep and never wake up. My friend said she gave the medicine and held her baby for the next hour or so and he slowly began to breathe at less frequent intervals and then stopped breathing at all. She said it was very peaceful. It was the middle of the night and summertime. The windows were all open and they could hear the chirping of the crickets and the rocking of the rocking chair. She rocked her baby and cooed to him and then he was gone, very much without incident, very peaceful.
I was shocked at first when she told me of this and I don't think I would have be! en brave enough to do it, in case something went wrong, but doesn't it sound so peaceful and wonderful?
By the way, does anyone know why cats want to go outside when they are ready to die? I find that interesting and have always wondered.
