Nina,
I was not able to speak to Patricia again, although I did email her. I don't have her phone number so I was hoping she will call me. She probably will or else give me a phone number. Yes, you have a point about stress with relocating especially since Sophie and I have bonded so tightly. I was a bit frazzled when I wrote that. The moving to a new home would be so hard for her (and me). I doubt I could give her up no matter what, anyway. I just worry that my house's limitations will affect her health adversely, you know? She needs to be watched so carefully and needs her meds on time or she will become blocked with stool (although I believe cats don't have a danger of dying of that unless it goes on for too long, hope that is correct). I guess if she does all right after being gone for two days then I will know that it will be OK if she drops out of sight again for a few days in the future.
Anne,
I'm so pleased to hear you found Sophie! As far as looking to place her
in another home, why don't you ask Patricia what Sophie thinks when you
call her to tell her you've found her? Only you can decide if Sophie
would be happier somewhere else, but one thing I know for sure is that
cats hate change. It sounds like she's high strung already, sending her
to a strange place with strange people, even the nicest people in the
world, would be very difficult for her. What's wrong with letting her
find hiding places? Doesn't she eventually come out to eat? My cats
have dry food available all the time, but they get a little canned every
night at the same time. When I call them by name they usually come, but
when I call them at dinner time, they all come running. Why don't you
start training Sophie to come at the same time each day by giving her
something extra special? That way you'd be able to keep track of how
she's doing at least once a day. I'm always glad when I discover a
cat's hiding place, as long as I don't disrupt them (make them feel
their hiding place isn't safe), I have a starting place to go look when
they pull a disappearing act.
Very glad your Sophie's safe,
Nina
