The only thing I can think of is to try to train her to come for cat treats (shaking the can) or canned food.  I have mine trained to come to those sounds............. BUT, if one of them is on med.s or something they won't come, so it really doesn't help for that.  (Except Bob. lol.  My fat cat will come for anything anytime whether there's medicine involved or not.)

T,
I agree, but when she becomes blocked and quite obstipated, she becomes ill, vomits, is weak, lethargic, depressed and I think that is a time when she might try to hide, as she knows what is next from me.  An enema.  (although she doesn't mind them too much, I think she would rather not, ha!).  So I wish I had a happy medium where she can be free and enjoy life but also reachable if necessary, you know what I mean?

Anne,

If when you catch Sophie, and she looks fine health-wise, why not just let her stay loose? Since she comes to you anyway, given time, she'll prob. stop hiding and just be a free and normal cat.

Just a thought. Better a shorter quality life, than a long boring safe one.
