We took the abandoned cat to the local vet (Cat Hospital). They said
the cat would make an excellent pet - he is very mellow, friendly and
in good condition. His teeth are fine. They estimate he is around 2 yrs
old and has never been neutered. He has been in a few fights.
He tested positive for FELV+. They will be running a second test and
we'll know the results next week.
My questions:
1.How reliable is the second test?
2. if he is 2 years old, does this mean he mean he has some existing
immunity to the FELV+. I understand that all cats will eventually
succumb, but kittens have a harder time and are more likely to die
sooner.
3. Anecdotally, what are some of the experiences people have had with
life spans?
4. Several people have expressed concern about the medical costs for
taking in an animal. Some have suggested they might be able to do so -
but if significant vet costs came up, they'd opt for conservative
treatment for pain relief only. What are people's thoughts on this? Ex.
if this was the only household I could find vs. letting him roam
without any help on the street?
5. I keep receiving a lot of contradictory information: ex. a cat who
has been vaccinated will test positive. Even a second test is not
definitive etc.
