PAWS?
Here's my 2 cents' worth: Paws was the only shelter that would have
anything to do with the 6 strays I got involved with (long story). They agreed
to put them on the adoption website and spay/neuter them, provided I fostered
them. But they also made it clear they wanted a 'donation'. So I gave them $150
(they wanted more).
They
tested for Felv etc at the spay/neuter clinic, and that's when it came to light
that 5 were pos.
HOWEVER, I was only allowed to use the PAWS clinic in
the first place because their technician was never able to get to them to test
them for Felv first. (And, in fact, having seen her in action later, wouldn't
have been able to catch them anyway.)
So,
it's quite possible PAWS' clinic would have refused them, and here's why I
particularly believe this may be the case:
At the
PAWS clinic, there was one staff person who was openly and offensively
anti-feral. I believe she may have been the office manager but I can't be
sure---I wish I had got her name. People who take their animals to PAWS for low
cost spaying/neutering are encouraged to bring them back if the cat gets ill
afterwards. Flavia got ill, and when I tried to bring her back, this
person literally screamed at me that she would not book me in, because
the cat was feral 'and no feral cat has ever come through these doors'.
I was
shocked because I couldn't believe that a supposedly pro-animal organization
would discriminate against ferals. I couldn't report her because I didn't have
her name. But I have needless to say very mixed feelings about PAWS. They
certainly made a big mistake in hiring that employee. Kerry

If you have a felv+ kitty they might not neuter!
I live in a Chicagoland suburb and found a stray that was felv+. I
wanted to get her spayed cheap and this place had a great price ($25 I
think). But when I told them that she was felv+ they acted like she had
the PLAGUE! They would not take her! Now I can't be sure that it was
PAWS but I'm pretty sure that it was. If not it was someplace like
this. So, if you have a kitty that you already know is felv+ they might
not do it!

PAWS Chicago (Pets Are Worth Saving) is the city's largest no-kill
humane organization. Their work is focused on alleviating our city's
tragic pet overpopulation problem. Did you realize that 28,652 dogs
and
cats were euthanized in Chicago in 2003? The best way to control dog
and
cat overpopulation is by decreasing birth rates.
