I brought him deli slices to the hospital last night and he nearly attacked the bags for them. I could not get them out fast enough and rip them into little pieces and he stuck his head in the bag and started eating the big pieces! I almost cried with relief, and fed him about 3 slices of turkey, ham, and turkey ham before I realized maybe that was a bit much for a cat who had not been eating on his own. I then opend some fancy feast and he ate a few bites of that. And then looked really ill. He got a bit of a stomach ache or nausea from all that food, which I felt bad about, but he did not throw any of it up! And the vet just called while I was writing this to say his billirubin fell from 17 to 10 (1 is normal, so 10 is still high, but she said this is as fast as it could possibly fall because the body has to process it as it goes down) and his blood count went up a few points from the transfusion yesterday but then went up a point on its own today! All of which she says are very good signs, and it is possible he can come home with me later today with aggressive support care (fluids, syringe feeding, etc.). But he may need to stay another night since a billirubin of 10 is "nothing to sneeze at" in her words.
I am tentatively relieved, but still very scared. His long-term prognosis is still not good, but I think he is beating everyone's expectations so far. Please continue to pray and send good thoughts to him-- I really think it helps! Thanks, Michelle
