In regard to a fire....One thing that is often in the news is someone who ran back into a burning house to find his cat and never made it back out....Then the sad thing is the next day the cat is found..somewhat singed but alive but now homeless and the news is begging for someone to take him as the shelters are all full......
Even if the cat doesn't make it out if he stayes on the floor he has a much better chance than a human crawling on their hands and nees....
Probably the best thing to do is to go outside leaving doors open and calling the cat from outside....
If you can reach your cat and throw him out the window thats OK but don't spend too much time trying to find him...
If you can catch a fire just as it is starting you can put it out fairly easily...If you have a fire extinguisher handy that might be time better spent in the 1st minute....
Also make sure the fire department is on the way...A cat can survive for a while on the floor if the fire department gets there in time to put it out before the floof burns...

Whatever you do...save your own life so you will be there for your cat if he does save his own life...

Michelle,

Is this particular topic entitled: "When Disaster
Strikes" by Terri Crisp from Noah's Wish?

This article was published on 8-23-04 and it describes
the damages left behind by the natural disaster of
Hurricane Charley.

I just wanted to confirm that this is the article in
the forum that you were referring to.

Best Friends sanctuary has an on-line list service
called No More Homeless Pets, which invites a
different expert every week to answer questions from
list members in the rescue community.

A few months ago, the expert for the week was a
woman who is a professional disaster planner for
shelters and rescues. She was actually answering
questions while in Florida dealing with one of the
hurricanes.

If you go to the Best Friends website,
www.bestfriends.org, and look for the archives to the
No More Homeless Pets forum, you should be able to
find her information, tips, and links to resources.
