I just read this on the AC list I belong to and pasted it below.  I have
heard before that some people believe the spirit, or consciousness of a
being, departs their body before clinical death occurs.  Some feel that
those near death come and go from their bodies, (perhaps explaining that
vacant look we've all seen near the end of life).  It gives me comfort,
I hope it's true.

it can see there is no future for the container. I remember reading a
story of Edgar Cayce--he was waiting for an elevator and when the door opened he realized that no one already in there had an aura. They otherwise were moving about and responsive to their surroundings. He declined to get on the elevator and a few seconds later it fell several floors and everybody inside was killed."
