When I was growing up we always had some cat who had just sort of shown
up... No one talked about 'ferals', 'strays', etc. They were just cats who
needed a home. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.. some of the guys would just
sort of stay inside, some would want to be outside except in really bad
weather.. but they all knew that ours was their 'home'....I just figure that
any cat that can live on his own outside for any length of time is super
bright and resourceful... Their very existence depends on figuring out the
safest environment and when they figure out it's a particular human....

Hi, It's grate that you can tame them like that. I had a stray, in the
parking of the complex I live in. Every time I took food out to him he
would spit and hiss at me. I would step back and stay there so the
neighbors cats would not get his food. I tied to trap him...no luck.
This went on for about 10 mos. I felt he must be a feral. Then one day
out of the blue he walked over to me, rubbed against me and let me pick
him up. I could not believe it. About a week later I discovered he had
been declawed. He turned out to be a super loveable guy. He had just
been trying to survive
