Has anyone used this drug as a decongestant for kittys with a URI? Any nasty side effects??
I have a newbie rescued from death row who came to me in good condition other than minor URI symptoms (sneezing, clear discharge from nose) but after four days still will not eat on her own (except a few crunchies Sat. AM) and doesn't exhibit signs of hunger. I've had kittys with URI's before and much worse than this, and I know when cats can't smell they often will not eat, but they will usually act hungry, sniff of the food and then walk away. This little girl won't even sniff the food and I'm having to feed her baby food mixed with Nutrical via syringe, which she accepts readily. She's also been getting Transfer Factor 3x/day in solution with electrolytes and is not showing signs of dehydration. She is urinating but no solid stool since bringing her home Wed. PM. She does not act depressed, but is not playful, seeks warmth and is very quiet. She purred profusely the night I brought her home but is not purring now; she is a kneader and sucks on your shirt or whatever when held. I fell asleep on the sofa with her on my chest last night and when I awoke in the wee hours she was on the floor curled up next to a space heater and did not respond when I first touched her. Her ears and nose are cool to the touch and she hasn't shown signs of running a temp so I haven't insulted her by shoving a thermometer up her butt. Another rescuer gave me some Cypro which was prescribed for another rescued kitty "for sneezing." I looked it up in the Merck drug reference book I have and it is an antihistamine. She said it is gnarly tasting and causes kittys to foam at the mouth and I am hesitant to use it if there is something gentler available. I seem to remember someone posting a while back about giving pediatric decongestant to a kitty, but can't remember which kind. Any feedback will be most helpful. I just lost a horse on Monday and have $$$$ in vet bills from that so I'm hoping I can get this little girl jump started without more vet bills. She will get tested today for FIV/FeLV. Sally in San Jose
