We have a lot of mice in our house, who we try to protect from the cats.  But the cats kill them sometimes, as well as chipmunks and voles in the yard, and then I feel like I have saved and cared for one animal and in doing so indirectly killed others.  So many of our good and well-intentioned efforts lead to unexpected consequences. It is part of life, maybe one of the hardest parts.  On the other hand, it is entirely possible that the mouse's death had nothing to do with what you did.  The fact that you were able to catch the mouse at all could indicate that the mouse was already sick.  I of course think you are wonderful for caring about mice at all, since most people do not.
