I've wondered about this one as well!  :)  I have a reptile, so I've learned 
that basking through a window pane isn't very effective because glass blocks 
the UV rays necessary for the body to utilize certain vitamins!  Then again, 
vitamin D3 can be added as a supplement to food...But, whenever possible, I 
like to open the windows so that the cats can bask through the screens!
