I have an acquaintance Whose dog ate a small candy
bar and died from chocolate toxicity. My Cookie cat loves cookies of any
kind and if allowed, she would eat enough to be toxic.

Yes, chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats. It
can be quite serious. What a vet told me is the reason you don't
hear the warning against chocolate with cats is because they generally
don't LIKE chocolate - so they don't see any chocolate poisonings because
cats aren't eating the stuff. But if you have a cat who actually
likes it, you have to do everything in your power to keep them away from
it. The dog too. It's really not good.
I saw a story on
TV once about a dog who ate an entire chocolate cake off the table -
including the knife - and the vets were more concerned about the toxicity
of the chocolate than they were about getting the knife out of his
stomach. He swallowed it whole and didn't puncture anything - they
were able to perform surgery to remove it. Lucky dog.
