For later reference: I solved the problem by adding
export PYTHONPATH=
right before sourcing the fenics file. Obviously the fenics path is not
appended at the front or for some other reason parts of the libraries
are still taken from the system instead of the local ones. Maybe it is
prudent to add this command to the fenics.stable etc. files and remark
that all other path additions have to happen thereafter.
Best,

I'm wondering if these problems might occur when PYTHONPATH is not
clean/empty while compiling dolfin/ipython/fenics as there is a system
python installed with petsc and parmetis and even an obsolete dolfin
version.

I tried that already as you mentioned it last time already but it did
not help. I'm trying now with the removed path variables and can try
your suggestion afterwards.

The problem is likely this part:
download: |
mumps, scalapack, blacs, ml
If you remove this, then it should find the correct ParMETIS. If you
need to build PETSc with any of these packages, then we will have to
fix them in HashStack.
Manipulating PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH is probably not the way to go.
