All things being equal, and in a perfect world where volunteers have piles of time to attend to even the smallest tasks... I would say that “respecting the user” means respecting their privacy.
Which is to say that privacy is a default requirement with justification required for removing it. But the world is not perfect and volunteers do not have time to cover every base perfectly.
