My questions, therefore, to myself and the list at large, are:
- How did the prompt labels get so badly broken?
You used strange voice to create them
I used, well, tried to use kal_diphone_us.
- Do the prompt labels usually require such manual intervention?

- How can I fix them?
Fix the voice you are using
I have tried substituting kal_diphone_us for cmu_us_bdl_arctic_hts and I
have ended up with the same artifacts. This is based on the mocha timit
phrases, all of which seem to be adversely affected by the same.
- Is it more likely I did something wrong in the initial steps to make
this happen?

Hmm :-/
I have made the above amendments to switch from kal_diphone_us to
cmu_us_bdl_arctic_hts in the below voice metadata files:
./festvox/[voice name]_clunits.scm
./festvox/build_clunits.scm
The only thing I can think of is that I am using a US voice to try and
create a UK one, but surely that alone can't be the cause of all this
trouble!?
Have I missed something important?
I am finding this immensely frustrating because I am only trying to
mimic my own voice on the computer in order to be able to understand the
basics so I can then experiment with ways to improve the quality of
speech synthesis in general, but I'm hitting so many problems trying to
make even the basics work :-/
I've scrapped and started again on so many steps of the way that I
really am losing patience (not to mention hard disk space) with this
thing...
