Well, since it is well known that a wizard is never late, nor is he
early, he arrives precisely when he means to:
***
He always underestimated family ties. It had been his downfall before,
and now history was repeating itself; only this time, he was literally
falling to his death. Oh, he wouldn't _die_, his Horcruxes would anchor
his spirit to this life; but it would be another long, painful climb
back up the ladder of power, both personal and politicial.
It was funny in a way. He had crushed every enemy he had ever had, from
those long gone days he crushed Albus Dumpledore and Harry Potter, to
his political opponents in the Senate just decades ago. But even from
beyond the grave, Dumbledore and his accursed Order of the Phoenix still
kept thwarting him, time and again, no matter how many times he killed
them.
As he felt the lightning still flying from his hands hit the force field
and beginning to feed back into his mortal coil, Lord Voldemort
screamed; and just before his body disintegrated to dust - once again -
he briefly wondered if it was truly worth it to keep on fighting this
war, when even mythology no longer remembered its origins. But as
Emperor Palpatine's brittle body turned to ashes, Tom Riddle felt the
tug of his Horcruxes on his soul, like someone had pinned him to the
ground with weights heavy as sin, not letting him go to his rest; and as
night came to take him once again, he remembered what Dumbledore had
said about there being things worse than death, and knew him to have
spoken the truth.
