 is this what you're describing?

 As a note with "-an" it retains the same size, so I wonder if it's related
 to this: http://ffmpeg.org/pipermail/ffmpeg-user/2012-August/008841.html

 though converting it over and over into .mp4 doesn't seem to increase the
 duration...

 Also when I do an ffprobe on the input, it shows the last video packet at
 9.92 (lasting 0.04, so until 0.96), and the same in the output (XX.mp4),
 however the audio seems to last far longer (stretched? padded?)
