That's the general consensus I was able to find with other companies who have a similar project running.
That's the goal, I am currently working on a pilot that revolves around archiving and supplying the videos to the respective worker/department. Mkv and FFV1 seems to be one of the best options, due to being licensefree and lossless, as well as reasonably fast. We do not have a whole lot of Videos (yet), but I have to order our hardware, and I wasn't 100% sure if it was CPU only, and I am sure my superiors woud've liked me dumping money on some graphicscards. Thanks for the quick, kind and helpful answers. I did indeed stumble upon CELLAR, and I am sure this topic will be of greater importance in the future. In the Irish Film Institute, we mostly use FFV1/MKV as a preservation format for SD tape migrations, and FFV1 is really fast at encoding and decoding these files via CPU. However, we are also investigating using FFV1/MKV for 2K/4K RGB film scans, and the speeds obviously drop quite a bit. GPU acceleration would definitely help a lot. > > I checked the manufactures specs and googled to my heart's content but > wasn't able to find a proper answer. > Did you find the CELLAR mailing list in your travels? I'd recommend signing up as the process of standardising MKV/FFV1 with IETF is documented here https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/cellar - it would possibly be worth starting a discussion there about GPU encoding/decoding.
